Row, Row, Row Your Boat
The body is great at adaptation. When you give it the same stimulus repeatedly your body adapts and eventually the task becomes easier and easier. When it’s easy and your body isn’t challenged you won’t see any improvements.
So, how do you fix this… change it up! Today, I was looking for something different for my cardio workout. I walked down the line of equipment and way down at the end was the rowing machine. The poor machine always seems empty so I thought… I’ll give that a shot!
The first couple of minutes didn’t even seem like a workout. I was thinking la, de, da… this is like a stroll in the park. Oh man, when I got 8 minutes into the workout, I was out of breath and sweating like some kind of farm animal. I normally do cardio for 30-60 minutes, 3 or 4 times per week so while definitely not an elite athlete, I should have enough endurance to go 8 minutes on a rowing machine.
At minute 13 – only half way through, I was huffing and puffing, my legs were burning, my butt was screaming and my back was on fire. I was watching the timer on the machine, it was moving very slowly. This truly was a full body workout, every muscle was doing its part which is something I haven’t experienced from most cardio workouts. It was fantastic!
I felt challenged and proud about pushing through to the end. It was nice to do some cardio and feel like I was getting a great workout. My regular cardio routines make me feel out of breath and a little sweaty but this, this was something I really needed!
So, I encourage you to break out of your routine routines and try something new. Your mind will thank you and your body will pay you back with some great improvements.
