Motivational Member: Jessie S.
I heard about an amazing member last week and I wanted to share her story with you. I was working out at our Santee, CA Sport location (I like to try different clubs) and from my perch on the treadmill I saw this cute older lady using the weight machines. She was all dolled up and dressed in blue - she looked like she was off to bunco rather than the gym.
On my way out, I asked about her at the front desk. Fitness Manager Kaitlin K., said "Oh, that's Jessie... can you believe she's 91!" My jaw seriously hit the floor...
Kaitlin went on to say that Jessie previously had several medical issues and surgeries and her doctor encouraged her to start working out.
"Jessie is at the gym a couple days per week. She always has a smile on her face and is genuinely happy to be here. She's not like others her age, just getting on the exercise bike, Jessie is a treadmill kind of gal! She also doesn't just stick with cardio either, she always uses the weight machines to get in some resistance training," according to Kaitlin.
I got to meet Jessie and here's what she said about working out:
"In 1990 I had an angioplasty operation. My doctor at that time told me to start working out so I joined 24 Hour Fitness. I was working part time, but I... still made time, three or four times a week to work out. I have had a four-way bypass and four hip replacements but because of working out, I came out fine from the operations. I’m 91 years old and when people tell me how good I look I say, “I work out at 24 Hour Fitness Santee!”
I think Jessie's story is amazing. Jessie didn't start working out until she was 61 years old - proving that you're never too old to start. A day or two after seeing Jessie in Santee, I was grumbling about having to go work out after a long day. I thought of Jessie not missing a workout so I turned the car around and headed straight for the gym.
