Stacey K. Shows People Their Own Potential
#GroupX instructor Stacey K. from Houston, TX is still inspired by our members after 23 years of teaching. Stacey says, “They inspire me by their force of will, their work ethic, and above all, the trust they place in me to show them their own potential. That’s all we do as instructors, we show people their own potential.”
24HF: How long have you been teaching exercise classes?
SK: I’ve been teaching for 23 years! Currently, I teach strength training, yoga and Pilates, but throughout my career, I’ve taught everything: step, turbo kick, boot camp, aqua, hip hop, cycle and Latin fusion. It pays to know a lot of class formats and then you can narrow your skill set to teaching the ones you really love.
24HF: What was the first class you ever taught and how did it turn out?
SK: Step was my first class and it was a complete disaster! For starters, I was painfully young and clueless. I thought I knew everything but I just hadn’t arrived yet. The class started with 30 people and I think there were about four at the end. I vowed not to quit and I practiced and practiced until I eventually got the hang of it.
24HF: What’s the most important thing you can do for your class participants?
SK: Just being there and making every person feel welcome. I want them to know we are all-inclusive. No one is ostracized or made to feel less than special. We are all there in solidarity and ready to lend a supportive hand when needed.
24HF: Aside from a great workout, what do you get from the classes you teach?
SK: Resistance training has given confidence that comes from knowing my own strength and power. I love Pilates, it has given me balance, an iron-strong core and endless endurance. Yoga has given me great upper body strength—more, perhaps, than even resistance training—but also flexibility, an awareness of how important the breath is and most precious and elusive of benefits, which is true peace.
24HF: What inspired you to want to teach group exercise classes?
SK: I started teaching out of sheer desperation. My favorite instructor moved to Michigan to be near family. She was amazing; my body would ache for days after one of her workouts. I searched feverishly for someone to replace her with no luck. So I decided to go for my Group Fitness Certification and because of that one tireless and inspiring instructor who’d made such a difference in my life, I knew just how hard you could push a class to excel. Never underestimate the members at 24 Hour Fitness.
24HF: Of the classes you teach, which has been the most memorable?
SK: All of them - every class and every student is memorable. I may bring a certain amount of knowledge and motivation, but it's the members who bring the inspiration. They inspire me by their force of will, their work ethic, and above all, the trust they place in me to show them their own potential. That’s all we do as instructors, we show people their own potential.
