24 Hour Fitness Teams with Derek Jeter to Launch Clubs in New York City
28,000 square foot Facility Marks Industry Leader’s First Foray into New York
SAN RAMON, Calif. - February 18, 2008
24 Hour Fitness Worldwide, the largest privately owned U.S. fitness chain and leading health club pioneer, announced a partnership with New York icon and Yankees’ captain Derek Jeter to open its first health club in New York City. The signature sports club, which will be called 24 Hour Fitness – Derek Jeter, will open in late June 2008 at 225 Fifth Avenue, on the corner of 26th Street at Madison Square Park. There will be a pre-sale for memberships beginning today at the future site of the club, online at www.24hourfitness.com or by calling 800-224-0240.
As part of the joint venture, Jeter is an equity partner and will play an active role in the design, look, tone and feel of the clubs. Additionally, he will appear in advertising and make promotional appearances on behalf of the club. There are currently plans for two additional 24 Hour Fitness-Derek Jeter clubs to open in Manhattan over the next year.
“We’re very excited to open our first club in New York City and feel that it is the best possible way to begin our expansion into the Northeast,” said Carl Liebert, CEO of 24 Hour Fitness Worldwide. “And what better partner to do it with than Derek Jeter? He is an exceptional athlete who personifies the ideal New York sports icon – cool, classy, healthy, and above all, a winner. Derek has shown what can be achieved through hard work and a healthy lifestyle, and we know he’ll be a terrific ambassador for promoting the importance of fitness here in New York City.”
Jeter joins an elite group of sports and fitness superstars that have partnered with 24 Hour Fitness to create signature clubs, including Andre Agassi, Lance Armstrong, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Yao Ming, Shaquille O’Neal and Jackie Chan.
“24 Hour Fitness is the best at what they do -- helping people improve their lives through health and fitness, and that is why I’ve partnered with them,” said Jeter. “I know how the New York City lifestyle often makes it difficult to find the time to take care of your health. I think the people of New York will appreciate having a club of this quality accessible 24 hours a day, and I want to lead by example and encourage people to live better by incorporating fitness into their daily lives.”
24 Hour Fitness – Derek Jeter at Madison Square Park will occupy 28,000 square feet and will offer members a full service gym with numerous amenities including an extensive line of cardio equipment and free weights; sauna; group exercise classes; personal training; locker room and laundry service; pro shop with wide assortment of fitness apparel; Starbucks coffee and XM Satellite Radio.
