24 Hour Fitness® Team Member Pours Heart, Determination into Support of U.S. Troops Deployed Overseas

Encouragement from 24 Hour Fitness CEO Leads Enterprising Front Desk Employee Down Path of Giving

SAN RAMON, Calif. - April 18, 2011

24 Hour Fitness team member Jessica Maddin, driven by an innate desire to support the men and women serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, knew she wanted to do something – anything – to help those fighting to preserve freedom around the world. What she didn’t realize at the time was how a simple e-mail to 24 Hour Fitness chief executive officer Carl Liebert would change her life forever.

“I still remember what she wrote to me: ‘please help me by donating protein bars and vitamins to send to our soldiers,’” said Carl Liebert, 24 Hour Fitness chief executive officer.  “Jessica’s passion and determination struck me. I know what it’s like for those soldiers fighting so far from home because I’ve been there and as a former Naval officer Jessica’s email inspired me to join her in doing whatever I could to help our courageous soldiers serving overseas.”

Last year, Maddin sent an e-mail politely asking Liebert to lend his support to her cause and explained that, according to the U.S. Marine Corps, deployed military personnel lose approximately 50 pounds of body weight per deployment. Helping U.S. soldiers maintain their weight was chief among Maddin’s concerns and Liebert was intent on helping. Within 10 days of her initial overture to Liebert, Maddin received a shipment from the chief executive totaling more than $17,000 worth of 24 Hour Fitness retail products, including supplements, vitamins, protein bars and powders. Protein supplements and vitamins are crucial to help soldiers maintain their physical and mental sharpness during the demanding and rigorous workdays of deployed American soldiers.

“Truly, I was shocked when that first shipment arrived at my doorstep. It’s a testament to Carl’s character that he responded with such swift action to my shot-in-the-dark request,” said Maddin, a front desk employee at the company’s Pasadena club located on North Halstead.  “I can hardly express how much I appreciate the shipments from 24 Hour Fitness that keep coming and coming every month!”

Since April of 2010, Maddin has received product deliveries valued at more than $1,600 each month and in turn, Maddin has redistributed the donations from 24 Hour Fitness to soldiers abroad through 402 individual shipments. Thanks to Liebert’s generosity, Maddin was able to launch “Jessica’s Hope Project” as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization shortly after the first shipment arrived.

“There are people out there like Jessica who have the power to make a difference and take a stand,” said Liebert. “I hope the success we’ve had together through Jessica’s Hope Project serves as inspiration to others to carry through with their ambitions. The world is getting smaller every day and we all have so much untapped influence to make a difference in the lives of others and sometimes, all you need to do is ask.”
