24 Hour Fitness® Proudly Supports the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition and the Million PALA Challenge
Fitness Leader Promotes Nationwide Effort and Encourages Americans to Increase Daily Physical Activity
SAN RAMON, Calif. - June 6, 2011
24 Hour Fitness, the nation's largest privately-owned U.S. fitness club chain and leading health club industry pioneer, proudly announces its support for the Million PALA Challenge - a program of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN). By supporting the challenge, 24 Hour Fitness hopes to encourage all Americans to increase their daily physical activity. The goal is to have one million Americans successfully earn Presidential Active Lifestyle Awards (PALA) by September 2011.
"We are honored to have support from one of the fitness club industry's most respected leaders whose goal of changing lives through fitness aligns perfectly with ours," said Shellie Pfohl, executive director, President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. "Working with organizations like 24 Hour Fitness allows us to further promote healthy lifestyles through specialized programming and education."
PCFSN motivates participants to be physically active on a regular basis by encouraging them to engage in activities they enjoy to earn PALA. To earn PALA, participants must complete their recommended daily physical activity (30 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity per day for adults, 60 minutes per day for youth and teens) five days each week for a minimum of six weeks. Participants can monitor and log their activity online at www.presidentschallenge.org. As a Million PALA Challenge partner, 24 Hour Fitness is encouraging its nearly four million members and 21,000 Team Members to participate through in-club promotions, direct email and online via social media through the end of the challenge in September.
"At 24 Hour Fitness, we know it can be difficult for people to stay determined and stick to their fitness goals," said Carl Liebert, chief executive officer, 24 Hour Fitness. "This challenge is a great way for people to make a commitment to fitness and stay motivated."

24 Hour Fitness supports the cause to help fight childhood obesity by offering youth programming and partnering with organizations that promote exercise and healthy living among children. Partners include KaBOOM!, Playworks and the California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports - non-profit organizations dedicated to cultivating physical activity and healthy habits among kids. 24 Hour Fitness is firmly committed to this issue and also has representatives available in select areas to speak with community groups about childhood obesity and the importance of family fitness. The speaking engagements, which are free of charge, focus on simple steps that parents can take to help children lead healthier lives.
