24 Hour Fitness® Announces San Diego Expansion Plans, Builds on Historic Area Ties
SAN RAMON, CALIF. - Sept. 8, 2011
24 Hour Fitness announced today significant expansion plans in San Diego, home of one of the company’s first club locations. Through relocation and upgrades at three popular facilities, the fitness leader will make an investment of more than $20 million in San Diego within the next 24 months, which represents one of the most substantial market investments the company has made within the last five years.
"Expansion is always exciting for our company, but even more so today because we have such deep ties to the residents of San Diego, many of whom have been members for more than 20 years,” said Jim McPhail, executive vice president of real estate and chief development officer, 24 Hour Fitness. “We’re confident that these relocations and upgrades will greatly improve our members’ club experience, while also continuing to provide them with the access, convenience and value they’ve come to expect from 24 Hour Fitness.”
Of approximately 420 - 24 Hour Fitness® clubs nationwide, more than 30 are in San Diego County. In addition, the three announced relocations will account for 153,000 square feet of club space:
- Balboa – The current Balboa Sport club will relocate from the 7620 Balboa Avenue location into the space formerly occupied by Albertson’s grocery store at the Vista Balboa Center in Kearny Mesa. The new facility, slated to open in summer 2012 as a Super-Sport club, tops 65,000 square feet of workout space and will offer state-of-the-art cardio, strength and functional training equipment with personal viewing screens on select machines. In addition, the club will feature a full-sized basketball court, functional training area, racquetball, an indoor lap pool, sauna, steam room, towel service and more. The location will also offer ample and convenient parking to serve 24 Hour Fitness members at any time throughout the week.
- Westfield University Towne Center (UTC) – The current UTC Active club will relocate from the 4405 La Jolla Village Drive location to a space within the Westfield University Towne Center, as a Super-Sport club. The new facility will span more than 45,000 square feet and offer state-of-the cardio, strength and functional training equipment with personal viewing screens on select machines. In addition, the club will feature a full-sized basketball court, towel service, a functional training area and more.
- Westfield Plaza Camino Real – The current Carlsbad Active club, which first opened 30 years ago, will relocate from the 2213 South El Camino Real location in Oceanside to a space across the 78 freeway previously occupied by Robinsons May. The new facility, slated to open as a Super-Sport club in summer 2013, will span more than 56,000 square feet and offer state-of-the cardio, strength and functional training equipment with personal viewing screens on select machines. In addition, the club will feature a full-sized basketball court, functional training area, towel service, four-lane lap pool, whirlpool and an extensive outdoor aquatic area with a family pool, water slide and “splash zone” for children.
All three of the anticipated 24 Hour Fitness Super-Sport clubs will also offer personal training services, a full schedule of Group X® classes and Kids’ Club babysitting service where children ages six months up to 12 years can enjoy activities while their parents work out.
“24 Hour Fitness is a longtime fitness leader in the San Diego market and we look forward to many years of continued partnership,” said Tom Tierney, San Diego regional senior vice president, Westfield Group. “Across the nation, Westfield aims to serve the many lifestyle needs of our customers and we’re proud to provide easy access to exercise at great value through 24 Hour Fitness.”
Deep Roots in San Diego
One of the first 24 Hour Fitness clubs was located in El Cajon in the San Diego metropolitan area, and marked the beginning of the fitness company’s success in the San Diego market. Since that time, El Cajon club members benefited from a club relocation in late 2009, when the 24 Hour Fitness El Cajon Main Street Super-Sport club opened its doors with new amenities and significant upgrades. The area also includes the 24 Hour Fitness Escondido La Terraza Super-Sport club, which was renovated in April 2011. The fitness leader also has future renovation plans for its popular College Grove location, which is located at 6348 College Grove Way in San Diego.
“I began my 24 Hour Fitness career in San Diego more than 30 years ago, and I take great pride in expanding our footprint in the area,” said Danny De La Rosa, South Division president, 24 Hour Fitness. “We’re fortunate to be in a position to bring our club vision to life in a tough real estate market and proud to make improvements like these that better address the needs of consumers seeking a fit and healthy lifestyle.”
