24 Hour Fitness shares simple movements to help ease a stressful day
San Ramon, Calif. - April 12, 2013
Many studies have proven stress can have both mental and physical effects on the body; and managing it can be just as important to overall health as exercising regularly, getting enough sleep and maintaining a balanced diet. Stress Awareness Month is a great reminder to evaluate how stress impacts your life, and how you can make constructive changes to combat its negative health effects.
In honor of Stress Awareness Day (April 16), 24 Hour Fitness shares simple exercises to help relieve tension at work, home or on-the-go; specifically designed with stress reduction in mind:
• Shoulder Clench – Squeeze your shoulder blades toward each other by firmly flexing the muscles in your upper back, like you’re trying to hold a pencil between your shoulder blades. Then bring your elbows in past your ribs and let your head hang slightly back. Hold for a count of five and then release.
• Leg Releases – While seated in a chair, sit on your right foot and extend your left foot straight out in front of you, flexing it. Grasp your thigh or calf with both hands and bend forward. Lightly pull your chest toward your foot and lengthen your spine, letting your head hang to your knee. Hold for ten breaths and then switch sides.
• Standing Pigeon – While standing at your desk or a table, bring your right knee up and place your right shin onto the desk parallel to the edge. Then, bend forward at your waist over your right leg. Hold for a count of 10 and repeat with the other leg.

While sometimes the causes of stress can be uncontrollable, the impact it can have on the body can be easily managed. A regular fitness routine is an essential part of decreasing stress long-term because it reduces stress-induced hormones like cortisol, and boosts endorphins which can naturally improve your mood.1 To begin or get back into an exercise routine, 24 Hour Fitness offers energizing group exercise classes, knowledgeable personal trainers and a wide range of other fitness amenities and services that can help you stay motivated and keep stress at bay.
