Back Exercises

The back muscle is another large group of muscles located, oddly enough, on the back of the torso.  The main muscles in this group are the latissimus dorsi (AKA the lats) and the trapezius (AKA the traps).  Both of these muscles help with posture and many other movements of the body.

The lats go from the lower back up to the upper arm.  One of their functions is the opposite of the deltoids... to pull the upper arm closer to the body.  These actions include pulling things closer to the body such as rowing a boat, sweeping the floor or doing a pull up.

The traps are located higher on the back and run from the spine, neck and head to the top of the shoulders.  Most of the action of the traps is on the shoulder blade and include shrugging your shoulders and pulling your shoulder blades together.
