years as a trainer:
Since 2001
favorite workout:
My favorite workout, by far, is one of my reactive programs due to being an ex collegiate baseball player. I have always enjoyed programs where I could use quickness, power, and force.
favorite client success story:
I have a client who is 56 years old, has a herniated disk, his l4 and l5 vertebrae are fused together and when he came to me he was the most inflexible client I had at the time. His doctor told him that he shouldn't lift anything more than 25 pounds over his head. Three years later after doing corrective exercise training, strength training and working on his core and flexibility, he is capable of doing just about any activity that a fit 25 year old can do and probably better. Also, he is always telling me to bump up the weight when we do a shoulder press. He is now lifting 27.5 pound dumb bells over his head without any discomfort. Also, his flexibility has drastically improved as well. Before he could barely bend down and touch his knees, and now he is capable of reaching his ankles and holding a static stretch without pain.
favorite way to motivate clients:
The best way to motivate my clients is by first figuring out their long term goal. Then I break that down into short term goals, and when they are struggling or ready to quit, I will remind them of their short term goal, whether it is percentage fat lost or lean mass gained.
exercise/fitness philosophy:
I believe that all fitness professionals should stay up to date on the latest research in exercise and fitness, as well as remembering what the client's goals are and how we are going to get them there in the quickest and safest way.
hobbies and interests:
Besides training and grad school, I enjoy reading, tracking the stock market, and attending church.
most embarrassing moment:
Most embarrassing moment had to be when I was going into a church for my friend's wedding. I dropped the program and as I reached down to pick it up, my pants ripped at the seam. You can only imagine where!
nickname:
Barnyard (my last name is Barnard)
one day I want to:
Become a father and be a mentor to my son or daughter as my dad was for me .
