Cruise Control: Burning Questions on Staying Healthy This Summer
Don’t let the worry of sabotaging your health and fitness routine keep you from enjoying your summer. We asked celebrity trainer Jorge Cruise for his tips on how to stay healthy this summer, including how to slim down for any upcoming events and how to get the family in on fitness.
24Life: How can I eat healthy and stay on track but still have a life this summer?
Jorge Cruise: You can practice self-control and making smart food decisions. Summer provides countless opportunities to indulge in unhealthy foods, so make sure you ditch processed foods and swap them out with whole foods. If you are headed to an event, eat healthy foods beforehand so you don’t end up overindulging on junk food. On the Cruise Control Diet, I allow one cheat meal every 10 days so that you don’t feel deprived and can treat yourself to your favorite foods without compromising your weight-loss journey.
24Life: How do celebrities really get ready for big events? I have a wedding in four weeks and I want to look great.
JC: Celebrities like Kourtney Kardashian, Hugh Jackman, Jimmy Kimmel, Jennifer Lopez and Terry Crews are all practicing intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting is when you eat food during a certain window and refrain from eating outside of that window. During intermittent fasting, your body is signaled to use stored fat as its main source of energy instead of the food that you eat. Intermittent fasting also helps your body release water retention and eliminates bloating. If you intermittently fast over the next four weeks and eat whole foods high in fat, protein and vegetables, this will prepare you for any big event! [Make sure you’ve checked with your doctor before making a change to your diet.]
24Life: I am committed to being a runner, but I also want to build some muscular strength, too—but don’t have a lot of time to add on another full workout. Any advice?
JC: Try my eight-minute Just 2 Moves high-intensity interval training workouts and pair it with intermittent fasting to grow muscle and definition.
24Life: What are great ideas to involve family in fitness without being annoying?
JC: If you want to involve your family in fitness, try an outdoor activity like roller-blading, skateboarding, beach volleyball or hiking. Having a family day will increase your heart rate and help you burn extra calories, all while spending extra quality time with your family.
